Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn

Welcome to the first non-multiplayer game review on this site!  There were 2 previous attempts of getting these single player Nintendo Games into this site, but let’s just say they had some multiplayer in it…

Anyways this game is full single player, no multiplayer, but nonetheless a great game.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is a sequel to the GameCube fire emblem game: Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.  The game takes you 3 years later after the events in the first game.  You’ll be playing with unfamiliar faces, but worry not as characters from the old game will come…eventually…

Pro:
  • Choose from dozens of characters for you to fight the war with
  • New classes for you to evolve the characters into
  • You can now save during the battle
  • Strategize as you use the terrain, fighters, weapon advantages, etc to your advantage.
  • You can transfer your saved data from the Path of Radiance to this one.
Con:
  • The game is hard for anyone who has never played Fire Emblem games before.  I was stuck in the 3rd level, because I refused to let a person die, and I refused to turn the difficulty down.
  • Besides from some minor gameplay adjustments there isn’t anything new.  Same graphics controls, etc, but who can say that’s a bad thing?
  • Once a character dies they’re dead forever…

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn Gameplay

Gameplay

This Nintendo game is no different than the other Fire Emblem game of its series.  You start the game off with limited amounts of characters, but as you progress further into the game you’ll soon find yourself numerous amounts of characters.

Fire Emblem is a turn based strategy grid game.  You deploy your units you want to use for the battle.  Each character can use weapons varying from magic, to bow + arrow, to melee weapons like swords, spears, and axe.

What’s more each weapon has their own set of weaknesses.

Sword beats à Axe beats à Spear beats à Swords.

However with melee, range, and magic  there’s a system, but it depends on the situation.

The game really involves strategy.  Ex: On one hand range can attack melee without getting countered, they are frail to melee attacks, and if they melee unit attacks them they can’t fight back.  Magic can hit someone no matter what though.

Since the game is turn based you get one turn to move, use items, or attack an enemy.  After every character has made their turn, it’s your opponent’s turn.  They do the same thing and then it’s your turn again.  Beware: If one of your units die they’ll never come back, ever.

Whenever a unit attacks they’ll gain exp (and if they get the kill they get even more exp).  Once a unit gets 100 exp, they get a level.  Once they get high enough you can give them a promotion item and they’ll change jobs, getting more stats, and starting back at level 1 for more levels!

In each stage you’ll get to interact with places like stores, villages, and sometimes even the enemy.  Some enemies could be persuaded to join your army.  Some are easy to persuade while others take some thinking.

The point of stores is to replenish your weapons, as each weapon has a certain amount of use they could have.  You could also buy HP recovery items.

Villages have multiple functions.  Some may give you rare items; some might give important strategic information, while others might just be useless.

Conclusion

In conclusion Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is a hard game, but once you learn to cut back on your losses, or just turning the difficulty down, you’ll soon learn to love the strategy.

Permanent death of characters are tough an annoying, especially if you’re trying to get all units and keep them all alive, however a recent change in the series has made it easier to avoid.  The ability to save mid battle allows you to load the game and try to keep the unit from dying.

Getting past the greed to keep everything will help you get past this game.  Remember for every action there’s a opposite reaction :D
