PostHeaderIcon Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity

Manipulate the powers of gravity and turn it into speed itself.  In the new Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity you don’t race with fuel, instead you use gravity to your advantage.

The most outrageous thing I find in this Wii game is that the instruction is for gamecube remotes!  What’s up with that?

Well regardless of that, you can still play very well with any type of remotes (as you would expect from any game).  The problem later disappears, as the help doesn’t appear as much anymore.

Anyways in this multiplayer Wii game you can’t quite move at the speed of light yet, but you can move faster then 400 MPH!

Pro:
  • The game may be slow at times, but you can go super fast
  • 3 types of character abilities (fly, power, and speed)
  • Unique twist and turns in each stage
  • A whole bunch of boards to buy
Con:
  • Instructions for the gamecube remote even though it’s a Wii game (which I guess is good for those of you with them)
  • Typical story
  • Short (I finished half of the game in 2 hours!)
  • Getting Rings isn’t easy

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity Gameplay

Controls

No time to stop for the street lights, there are races to win!
No time to stop for the street lights, there are races to win!

Personally, despite what I mentioned up there, I prefer to use the gamecube remote.  You start in a race by just basically trapped in the starting area.  You have a timer and a moving bar that shows you when the wall of electricity blocking your path is gone.  The trick is to get as close to it while moving when it opens up for you to take the lead.

Now that you’re in the race you move with the analog stick, you jump with the “A” button, activate Gravity Control with “B”, this basically lets you use gravity and change the road you’re on (specifically to the walls).  Changing a direction with this (Gravity Drift) helps you make those quick turns.  Finally if you press “L” or “R” you can use Gravity Dive which speeds you up while using your gravity bar.

Generally, the game will tell you what buttons you have to press, different paths, and where specific types of characters can go to.

Gameplay

Once again Sonic and friends are dragged into trouble.  This time, robots (hmm…) from Meteor Corps have

Wherever Sonic goes Amy follows! :)

gone crazy and is causing chaos in the streets.  Then they found Sonic and friends…

This is where the story starts in Story Mode.  In every race you can collect rings.  Not only does gathering rings give you power-ups for your specific boards, but you could also use them as money to buy more boards later on.

There are 3 types of characters:

  • Flying – These characters can jump into these flying circles and move faster while flying in the air.
  • Power – These characters can run through everything in their way, but the wall.
  • Speed – These characters can jump onto pipes and grind through the stages.

Note: Before you get these abilities you have to make sure you gather enough rings to gear change for the ability.  While you’re doing the things you also get gravity points for doing so.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity Multiplayer

This multiplayer racing game has Nintendo WFC, and local multiplayer for 4 players.

With the power of gravity you could somehow speed yourself up!

Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection

Now before you get too happy, you should know that you can only download ghosts online to race with.  This is basically saved data on how other people did in a ranking system.  You can challenge them.

Normal Race

In this mode you can choose from 2 races.  Sorry, but 2 players only.  The 2 modes are:

  • Free Race – As the name suggests you can choose any of the stages you unlock and race with your friends in it.
  • Grand Prix – You and a friend race through the stages in story mode one stage after the other.  The person who has the most points wins.  You get points obviously by the place you get (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc) in the races.

Survival Mode

In these modes you play can play cooperatively with 4 players in the 3 modes.

  • Survival Relay – You know what a relay is? Basically you just race to your teammate and then they start racing.  The first person to finish wins
  • Survival Ball – Think soccer.  With gravity control.  You have to gain control of the soccer ball and use the “B” button to launch it.  Press “L” and “R” to use speed boost.
  • Survival Battle – You go around collecting missiles from capsules.  The controls are the same as the one above.  What could be more fun then launching missiles at your friends?

Conclusion

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity is a fast paced multiplayer Wii racing game with a semi-complex of gravity.

Not only can you go race on walls you can smash through doors and objects, grind through the pipes, and fly through rings in the sky, but you can play some fun different modes with your friends.

Sure the game may be short, but it’s a good game to play every now and then.
If you don’t mind how badly Sega messed it up.

if you’re interested, I recommend you to try renting this game first at Gamefly starting as low as $8.95 or Try For Free!
