Multiplayer Wii Games FTW!

Rune Factory Frontier

Rune Factory Frontier is still the rpg, harvest moon game, that we all love to play.  Rune Factory started out for the DS as a harvest moon game, combined with fighting.  The 2 different gameplays surprisingly goes well with each other.

So now 2 games later we have Rune Factory Frontier for the Wii (also if you’re up with the news there’s going to be a Rune Factory 3 for the DS :D ).

Pro:
  • The RPG, farming, love finding game is still AWESOME (When I mean RPG I mean you can fight monsters and gain levels)
  • Just like all the Harvest Moon games you can do whatever you want, you can waste your time however you want.
  • Tame wild monsters to help you around the farm (they also act as livestock (cows, chicken, sheep, etc))
  • The game still revolves around the 4 seasons
Con:
  • Like all Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games you’ll eventually and maybe very early on, be bored of the game, AKA growing crops, sleep, repeat
  • You have fixed cameras which will become annoying
  • Long load times…
  • The Runey system is a very crippling add-on to the game that can stop your cash flow.

Rune Factory Frontier Background

Background

The main character of the game, Raguna (you can change the name if you want), went looking for a missing girl.  The missing girl ended up to be Mist, who moved to a new town, because she had a vision telling her to go there. Note: Some of these characters including the 2 mentioned are from Rune Factory 1.

Raguna decides to settle down in the town (hmm…I wonder why….) and run the farm in the town.  From then on you’re basically free to do whatever you want to do in the game.  Things will start slow and you might never even move on in the plot of the game if you don’t go to certain places.

However, if you take care of the farm, and make the land fertile, more people will settle in the town, and you’ll be on your merry way to wealth, power, and romance!

Rune Factory Frontier Gameplay

Gameplay

The gameplay to this Nintendo Game is still the same as any Rune Factory games for you fans.  The game is also closely similar to any Harvest Moon game you know.

First of all let’s talk about the difference between Rune Factory and Harvest Moon:

  • In Rune Factory you get to fight monsters with weapons.  As you slay them you’ll get EXP and eventually you’ll level up.
  • There are no animals you can buy.   There are no such things as cows, sheeps, and chickens in this game.  Instead you have monsters that can do the same things, and to get them to give you their “products” you need to tame them.
  • I think, don’t quote me on this one, but Rune Factory game has some on-going plot, where Harvest Moon games generally have no plot other then how you came to be.

Those are the main differences between the games.

So now Rune Factory Frontier has you doing the same thing any Harvest Moon game does, they get you to farm.  You first start out buying seeds where you’ll sow and water every day until the crops are finished growing.  Then you’ll sell them for a lot of money!

Besides cropping you can talk to the people around town.  You’ll find interesting people running around the town.  Some of them would be great friends while others allow you to be more intimate with.

In the game you can ask a girl out, eventually marry her, and then eventually she’ll get pregnant with your child.  However before you even get there, you have many, many things to do.  First of all you need to get love points from her.  You do this by talking to her and giving her presents that she likes, everyday.  Good luck there is 12 marriage candidates for you to try and woo!

Now besides farming, talking to people, and exploring the town you’ll eventually find dungeons.  In there you’ll find monsters that will attack you.  You can fight back with your farm gears, weapons, or anything else.  These places are essential to advancing on in the game + there are some other benefits.

The only way to get any pets is to tame the monster.  To do so you have to equip a glove and literally pet a monster to submission.  They’ll magically transport to your barn.  They can provide you services like giving you eggs, or letting you ride on them.

Finally exclusive to this game is the Runey system.  While I thought nothing of it at first I realize it’s another type of responsibility you must take on.  Runeys are these cute little spirits that represents the ecosystem of the village.  If they’re distributed properly your crops will grow faster, but if you ignore them, your crops will grow slower, or even stop growing altogether.

Conclusion

If you’re addicted to Harvest Moon games, Rune Factory games, or any type of simulation games you should definitely get this game.

Despite it’s repetition, you can easily spend the whole week playing the game.  You can put over 100 hours in this game and still be playing it (but I won’t guarantee your sanity…)

With things to aim for like ultimate power, money and romance you’ll find yourself playing the game for a long time.  Even after you beat the game, and everything, you might still see yourself coming back to play this game again.
